Today, I will be reviewing Condemned 2.
While I have not played through Condemned 1 yet (Huge mistake on my part, I have learned that), it was still one of the best games I have played...Right up until you started having to kill the dolls that seem to have connections with Al-Queda (Oh no, siree. No political correctness here). After that, everything just takes a hike towards the forced lands of disappointment. Because up until that point, you have been caving in people's head with pipes, pieces of wood with bolts in it and the occasional shotgun (which resulted in a shower of blood and broken teeth should you get a headshot) or the odd couple of golf clubs (which, I swear, Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw is right about, you can really almost feel the force of impact travelling up your arm as the tooth goes flying from the bastards face.) and all that entertained me immensely since I hate my fellow man. The investigation parts did want me to know a lot more about blood-spatter than is fair to accept from the common populace. The actual story, or atleast the one I could retrieve from it, seems to be about the (almost) Sam Fisher-lookalike Ethan Thomas who has somehow been disgraced over the course of Condemned 1 and become a drunken prick with a prechant for excessive violence and rum. For some reason, he is called upon to help fix some of the shit that hits the fan, then he finds even more of that when he uncovers the lost city of Turdopolis and has to burn the Turdopolians and their proud, yet stinky city to the ground.
So. Why does a violent, scary game suddenly turn so bad that it made me sad? Because the scary parts die out when you get guns, the second half of the came dissolves into shooting people from distances with your stupidly-overpowered shouty power (Yes, he gets a super-power...) and, of course, the before-mentioned guns. Subtlety and the atmosphere gets kicked in the head. It develops into a rather usual FPS that ends on a stupid-looking tower.
And thats why I am sad about the game turning out the way it did. It shat itself inside out halfway through, despite having potential to be so much more.
